Google Analytics Setup for Small Business

Most small business owners know they should be tracking their website. Few actually do it. And even fewer have it set up correctly.

Google Analytics 4 (GA4) is free, powerful, and takes less than 20 minutes to configure. Here is exactly how to do it.

How to Set Up Google Analytics 4

How to Set Up Google Analytics 4

Create your account. Go to analytics.google.com, sign in, and click Start measuring. Enter your business name, create a property for your website, fill in your timezone and currency, then hit Create.

Set up a data stream. Select Web as your platform, enter your website URL, and click Create stream. GA4 will generate a Measurement ID that looks like G-XXXXXXXXXX. Keep it handy.

Install the tracking code. This is where most people hesitate. It is easier than it looks. If you use WordPress, the free Site Kit by Google plugin handles everything in a few clicks. For Shopify or Wix, there are native GA4 integrations built in. If you want a cleaner long-term setup, Google Tag Manager lets you add GA4 without touching your site code at all. For more complex implementations, web development support can handle it for you.

Verify it is working. Go to Reports > Realtime in GA4, open your website in another tab, and check if a visit appears. If it does, your tracking is live. Give it 24 to 48 hours before reviewing standard reports.

Configure conversions. GA4 automatically tracks page views, scrolls, and outbound clicks. But you also want to mark key actions as conversions: form submissions, phone number clicks, and purchases. Go to Configure > Events, find the relevant event, and toggle Mark as conversion.

What to Look at First

What to Look at First

Once data is flowing, focus on three reports only.

Traffic Acquisition shows where your visitors come from. This tells you fast whether your SEO strategy is producing organic traffic or whether you are too dependent on paid channels.

Pages and Screens shows which pages get visits and which ones keep people engaged. High-traffic pages with low engagement are conversion leaks worth investigating.

Conversions confirms whether your key events are actually firing. If nothing shows up here, something in your setup needs fixing.

That is it. Most small businesses only need these three views to start making smarter decisions about their website.

FAQ Section

FAQ Section

Is GA4 free?

Yes, completely. The free version covers everything a small business needs.

Can I set it up without a developer?

Yes. CMS plugins and Google Tag Manager make it doable for anyone, no coding required.

How is GA4 different from Google Search Console?

GA4 tracks on-site behavior: visits, events, and conversions. Search Console tracks search performance: rankings, impressions, and click-through rates. Both are free and work better together.
